Recreation Program

Best Suited For:
At-risk youth, ages 10-17, who are enrolled in the Residential program at the Children ’s Home of Jefferson County.

The goal of the Recreation Program is to provide a multitude of on and off-campus recreation activities that allow each child the opportunity of building team skills, self-confidence, good sportsmanship, and feeling physically satisfied about themselves.

Outdoor Adventure Program /
Indoor High Element Rope’s Course
This adventure program works with youth to gain self-confidence in themselves, to trust others, and to practice problem-solving skills through the use of trust and teamwork exercises.  This is a "challenge by choice " program that allows youth to try difficult and challenging tasks in a caring and supportive atmosphere.  It also allows the child to "back off " when they have self--doubt with the ability to try again at a later time.

On-Campus/Off-Campus Recreation Activities
These activities include team events such as basketball, softball, and volleyball, as well as off-campus activities such as fishing, hiking, and miniature golf.  CHJC has a full compliment of recreation facilities which include a gymnasium, weight and exercise room, game room, softball field, and outdoor volleyball and basketball courts.

Summer Program
The summer program compliments the recreation program in instilling spirit with the youth.  Summer activities include the Summer Olympics Program, arts and crafts projects, team competitive sports, trips to amusements parks, boat tours, touring of business facilities, and other events.  The culmination event of the summer is camp week. All youth spend a week at a camp in a wilderness environment that include activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, camp fires, and organized sporting events.

Special Events
Throughout the year, the agency sponsors a number of special events.  One event is "The End of the Summer Picnic " where parents and organizations are invited to attend.. This event allows the youth to display their talents and to be recognized for their participation and commitment.  Other events include a Christmas party and dinner, cottage decorating contests, Adopt-A-Highway program, and a community based clean- up project.
